Audi R8 V10 Performance: A First-Time Renter's Checklist

Quattro all-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated V10 — arguably the most confidence-inspiring supercar rental for a first timer.

Guides

If you've never rented anything faster than a family sedan, the R8 is consistently the car our team recommends starting with — and Quattro all-wheel drive is the biggest reason why.

What makes it beginner-friendly

Where a rear-wheel-drive supercar can catch an inexperienced driver off guard in wet conditions or a sudden throttle input, the R8's all-wheel-drive system quietly manages traction in the background.

Still a real supercar

Beginner-friendly doesn't mean tame — the naturally aspirated V10 revs to 8,700 RPM and makes a sound that turbocharged rivals can't replicate. This is one of the last new cars sold anywhere with this engine layout.

The shared engine, explained

The R8's V10 is closely related to the engine in the Lamborghini Huracán — the two cars are built on the same platform. Renters who've driven both tend to describe the R8 as the more approachable, more forgiving version of the same underlying experience, which is exactly the point of putting it in this tier.

Everyday livability

Compared to nearly everything else in our exotic tier, the R8 has genuinely good outward visibility, a straightforward infotainment system, and a ride that doesn't punish you on rough pavement. It's the rare supercar you could plausibly run errands in.

Why Quattro changes the calculation

Most supercars send power to the rear wheels only, which means a heavy right foot in the wrong conditions can get away from an inexperienced driver quickly. The R8's Quattro system splits torque to the front axle the moment it detects slip, correcting the car before most drivers would even notice something was wrong. It's the single biggest reason we point first-time renters here instead of toward a rear-wheel-drive alternative.

First-time renter checklist

  • Confirm your insurance covers the vehicle's full value tier, not just liability.

  • Ask for a walkthrough of launch control before you leave the lot.

  • Start in a quiet area to learn throttle sensitivity before merging into traffic.

  • Budget for premium fuel — the V10 is thirsty under hard use.

  • Ask which drive mode the car defaults to — starting in Comfort makes the first few minutes much less intimidating.

For a first exotic rental, this is the one built to make you feel capable, not overwhelmed.
